Operational risk has always been inherent in business and financial enterprises.  The structured analysis, evaluation and management of operational risk is relatively recent.  This operational risk management training course traces some of the drivers and milestones in the development of operational risk management.  Operational risk is defined and key operational risk classes, with origins in the Basel Capital Accords, are reviewed.  The risk dimensions of frequency and severity are explained, and the implications for risk mitigation and control are discussed.

Operational risk is viewed as one component of a mix of risks facing the enterprise.  The treatment of operational risk within a broader enterprise risk management context, along with credit risk and market risk, is analyzed.  The implications for the firm’s economic capital requirements are discussed, and the key role of Senior Management and the Board in that determination are described.
